How to delete pages from a PDF
Deleting pages is the right job when the leftover PDF is the one you will keep, email, or upload. If you still need the full original, you want extract or split instead — those jobs are spelled out in How to split a PDF and extract pages and the shorter split vs extract page. This page is the “remove from the working copy” path.
Delete vs extract vs split
- Delete. The working file should no longer contain those pages. Example: strip the scanner’s blank backs, a duplicated signature page, or an appendix the portal forbids.
- Extract. You need a new small PDF of certain pages, and you still need the long original. Do not delete from the master to “make” that small file.
- Split. One document becomes several files that together cover the original (chapters, size caps). Nobody is throwing pages away.
People say “delete page 3” when they mean “send only page 3.” That mix-up is how a 40-page packet becomes a one-page file with no backup. Name the outputs for what they contain: application-no-appendix.pdf, not deleted.pdf.
Keep the original. Always duplicate first. Preview, Edge, and online organizers will happily save a shorter file over the only copy. The master stays in a stable folder until you have opened the new file, counted pages, and checked that a signature you still need did not sit on a “blank.”
Mac: Preview organize
- Duplicate in Finder. Open the copy in Preview. View → Thumbnails.
- Click the pages to remove. Shift-click a range; Command-click extras. Look at the thumbnail, not only the number printed in the footer.
- Press Delete (or Edit → Delete). The pages leave this copy only.
- File → Export as PDF under a new name. Open that file and confirm the page count.
If you selected the pages you wanted to keep by accident, do not keep deleting — close without saving if Preview still has revert, or start again from the duplicate. Dragging keepers to the desktop is extract; use that when the master must stay whole.
Browser organize
Online “delete PDF pages” tools are the same family as split/rotate sites: fine for a public handout, a poor idea for anything with account numbers or medical text. Expect size caps and a download you must reopen locally.
- Upload the duplicate.
- In the thumbnail strip, mark pages to drop (or mark pages to keep, if that is the only control — read the button before you click).
- Apply, download, open in a desktop viewer. Check first, middle, last, and any stamped page.
Some tools treat “page 3” as printed folio 3. Covers and roman numerals then delete the wrong sheet. Count thumbnails from the start of the file. Windows users without Preview can use Organize Pages in a local PDF app the same way: select → delete → save as. Edge’s print-range path is extract (Print to PDF of the pages you want), not delete — use it when you want a new file of keepers and will leave the source alone.
Blanks and duplicates
- Duplex blanks. A feeder often adds an empty back after every one-sided sheet. Delete the empty backs; keep a page that only looks empty if it has a faint stamp or a required “intentionally blank” notice.
- True duplicates. Two thumbnails that look identical may still differ (a wet signature on one). Open each at 100% before you drop one.
- Cover scanned twice. Keep the sharper one. If both are poor, rescan rather than compressing noise.
- Wrong insert from a merge. If the extra pages belong in another packet, extract them into their own file, then delete them from this copy — or re-merge from clean sources instead of surgery on a messy stack.
Do not delete pages to chase a file-size limit until the packet has the right pages. Removing a photo appendix is honest. Running maximum compress on a 80-page scan that is 60 pages of junk is not.
Safe order: delete, then compress or protect
Do page work on an unlocked copy, in this order:
- Rotate and reorder so you can tell which thumbnails are junk. Upside-down blanks are easy to misread.
- Delete (or extract keepers). Confirm page count.
- OCR if you need search, while the scan is still full resolution.
- Compress only if a limit remains. Start mild; see compress without wrecking readability.
- Password-protect last, on the file you will send. Encrypting first blocks many organizers. The protect guide is for a file you already control: set an open password — not for stripping a lock you cannot open.
If the PDF is already encrypted with a password you know, unlock a working copy, delete pages there, then apply a password to the new export if you still need one. If you cannot open the file, stop; this site does not cover removal.
After delete, spot-check the page that now sits where the gap was. Tables that spanned a removed sheet, and “continued on next page” lines, are how a tidy thumbnail strip still produces a broken packet.
